But Amy taught a great lesson today, and drove home an important point for me by sharing this poem:
Good Timber
The tree that never had to fight
For sun and sky and air and light,
But stood out in the open plain
And always got its share of rain,
Never became a forest king
But lived and died a scrubby thing.
The man who never had to toil
To gain and farm his patch of soil,
Who never had to win his share
Of sun and sky and light and air,
Never became a manly man
But lived and died as he began.
Good timber does not grow with ease,
The stronger wind, the stronger trees,
The further sky, the greater length,
The more the storm the more the strength.
By sun and cold, by rain and snow,
In trees and men good timbers grow.
Where thickest lies the forest growth
We find the patriarchs of both.
And they hold counsel with the stars
Whose broken branches show the scars
Of many winds and much of strife.
This is the common law of life.
(Douglas Malloch as quoted in Sterling W. Sill, Making the Most of Yourself [Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1971], p. 23)
It isn't our job to prevent our kids from experiencing sickness, heartache, and loss. Our job is to help them learn to work through that stuff. We need not feel bad about saying "no" at the store. We ought to be grateful for the opportunity. That is how we can add positive, strong, un-selfish, contributing people to this world!

That's pretty much the most awesome thing I've read all day. In fact I'm going to say the best thing I've read so far this week. Thanks a million Lynners, and thanks a bunch Amy!!
Dave
I think that poem is very true! It reminds of a conference talk, I think it was the saturday session, we all have to go through trials, how else will we know what we are capable of? Thanks for sharing!
Good poem, thanks for sharing!
Lyn! I miss you guys too!!! I agree with you that Sweety is definitley a watcher/observer. I think he's a sweet kid!! And you guys are great parents!...Congrats on all of the milestones with your babies, and I want to hear more about the whole eating a cricket thing.
Also, thanks for all of the kind words on my hesitations on giving birth in a few weeks. It makes me feel better and that no matter what it's all worth it and my worries will be inconsequential after she's here :). Hope you're having a great week!
