The Boys' Garden

At Grandma B's office Easter Egg hunt last spring, Smarty picked some lucky eggs and won some seeds and growing kits. At that time our yard was the size of a yoga mat, so, once the seedlings were big enough to be planted in the ground, Grandpa and Grandma were kind enough to give up some garden space to the boys.

The boys (and our cute neighbor, Amy) planted peppers, tomatoes, sunflowers, and birdhouse gourds.

In August, the sunflowers and tomatoes caught up with Sweety in height. And the gourd started to look like a real plant.

At their highest, the boys' mighty sunflowers towered at least 12 feet above the earth. They were just huge! The tomato plants grew into bushes too! The pepper and gourd plants were a little more on the modest side.

At the end, the poor sunflowers were awfully droopy. Grandpa B had to get pretty creative with props.

Harvest time!

The sunflower heads are now drying in our garage. We're looking forward to eating the seeds soon!

The boys didn't do too much tending. But Grandpa B made sure their plants were well cared for. Sweety and Smarty hopefully learned some appreciation for the way things work in the natural.

Thanks for providing us with a great learning experience, Grandpa and Grandma.
